WOONSOCKET – CVS Caremark Corp.’s retail pharmacy customers can now download their prescription and medication information to their Google Health accounts under a deal the two companies announced earlier this month.

CVS/pharmacy customers must first sign up for and be authenticated by CVS.com’s online prescription management service. After that, they can copy their records to their Google Health profile.

“By enabling patients to download their prescription information directly into their personal health record, we are helping to close the gap in today’s fragmented health care system and provide a full view of a patient’s health,” Helena Foulkes, senior vice president at CVS, said in a statement.

The news marks the expansion of the partnership between CVS and search giant Google Inc.’s personal health records service, which began working together when Google Health launched last May. Previously, only CVS Caremark plan participants and visitors to the company’s in-store MinuteClinic service could add their information to Google Health.

Google Health estimates that more than 100 million people are now eligible to manage their pharmacy histories online through its partnerships with CVS, Walgreens, Drug Fair, Rx.com and other pharmacy companies.

“This is good news, because having a current list of all your medications in one place helps your doctor, pharmacist, hospital and other care providers do a better job of taking care of you,” said Sameer Samat, director of product management for Google Health.

Last summer, CVS also agreed to partner with Microsoft Corp.’s HealthVault, a competing health records service.
