CRANSTON – Electro Standards Laboratories, a developer of advanced electric-motor control systems, today announced it has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research grant from the U.S. Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command.

The company will use the money to develop a small, wave-powered buoy.

The device – employing technologies that will enable it to harvest energy from ocean waves – will include a rechargeable battery or other device that enables it to store energy and power up on its own at any time. The buoy also will contain electronics for remote communications and sensing.

ESL will develop the technology in partnership with the Center of Excellence in Undersea Technology, which is based at the University of Rhode Island and funded by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC).
