Expanding cancer-fighting technology at Roger Williams Radiation Therapy

PROVIDENCE – Roger Williams Radiation Therapy, an affiliate of 21st Century Oncology, which offers a comprehensive range of cancer treatment services, has expanded technology to fight cancer. Stereotactic body radiotherapy is now available in Providence as part of its arsenal of cancer treatment options.

SBRT is a radiation therapy treatment that combines 3D-imaging with multiple, highly focused X-rays beamed at the tumor from different angles. With this technology’s pinpoint accuracy, SBRT delivers higher doses of radiation in fewer treatment sessions, with less risk to surrounding healthy tissue. Treatment is delivered in one to five sessions; standard external beam radiation therapy treatment typically takes five to eight weeks.

Patients with a cancer diagnosis may contact any of the four 21st Century Oncology facilities in Rhode Island – Providence, Wakefield, Warwick and Woonsocket – to determine if SBRT is appropriate for them.

“With the addition of [SBRT] to our arsenal of treatment tools, we can provide this faster treatment option to patients with certain cancers,” Dr. John Coen, a Roger Williams Radiation Therapy radiation oncologist, said in a statement. “This allows us to bring a wider spectrum of radiation therapy treatment options, using advanced technology in Providence to help our patients across the state.”

SBRT is particularly effective against small, well-defined tumors in inoperable or surgically risky locations such as the lung. This technology combines a high degree of accuracy with very high doses of radiation to precisely target the tumor while increasing the sparing of surrounding, healthy tissue.
