Forbes: Jonathan Nelson richest person in R.I.

PROVIDENCE – Jonathan Nelson, founder and CEO of Providence Equity Partners, was again recognized by Forbes as the richest person in Rhode Island with a net worth of $2 billion, up from $1.8 billion recorded in 2016.

This is the third year Forbes has run this list, which features 52 people (there were ties in two states), whose net worth totaled $747 billion, up from $682 billion in 2016.

According to Forbes, the takeaway from this year’s list is that the rich get richer. All but one person in the 2017 ranking made last year’s ranking – and saw their fortunes rise by an average of $1.74 billion.

Bill Gates was again named the richest in Washington state and overall, adding $12.9 to his fortune since last year to bring him to a net worth of $88.9 billion. His spot at the top of the list could be threatened next year by fellow Washington resident Jeff Bezos, who finished shy of Gates at $83.3 billion.

The richest person in Massachusetts according to Forbes is Abigail Johnson, president and CEO of Fidelity Investments, whose net worth is $14.9 billion.

Nelson was among those who were also named to Forbes’ recent list of the “The World’s Billionaires.” The Brown University alum was the was the only Rhode Islander on the list. If his company continues its upward trend, Nelson’s net worth may rise again in 2018. The firm tripled its initial investment into Soccer United Marketing with its recent sale of its interest in the organization.
