PROVIDENCE – The former director of the R.I. Board of Elections is suing the state, accusing his former colleagues of violating open-meeting laws and his right to due process.
Robert Kando, who served as the board’s executive director from 2005 until his dismissal earlier this year, filed a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court of Rhode Island. He alleges his former colleagues on the board held an unannounced meeting via email, on which “it took public action” at a later meeting, violating the R.I. Open Meetings Act.

Kando further alleges the board failed to provide him with adequate notice and an opportunity to be heard.
The board suspended Kando in March for 30 business days, and voted to fire him last month.
The former executive director is seeking an undisclosed amount of money in the form of attorney fees, litigation expenses and compensatory and punitive damages. •
