Former Russian sub to be dismantled for scrap

PROVIDENCE – A Russian submarine that was once a city tourist attraction until it sank in a 2007 storm is being dismantled.
Eddie Sciaba of Rhode Island Recycled Metals says they’ve removed large pieces of metal and equipment from the exterior of the Juliett 484, The Associated Press reported. They’re now working on the inside.
Sciaba says it contains about 35 to 40 tons of brass, about the same in copper, plus large amounts of stainless steel and titanium. Pieces of the submarine will be used for new cars and appliances, while some historic items such as periscopes have already been saved.
The dismantling project is expected to finish by the end of summer. &#8226
