PROVIDENCE – The nonprofit social service agency Family Service of Rhode Island received the Mutual of America Community Partnership Award and a $25,000 grant Thursday from the Mutual of America Foundation.
The award recognized FSRI for its partnership with several Rhode Island police departments to provide psychological first aid and other help to victims of crime and violence.

According to FSRI, the organization’s trauma-trained experts are deployed with law enforcement patrols for on-scene crisis prevention, compassionate assistance language support and follow up.
Mutual of America Foundation awards organizations for their value to the community, ability to be replicated by others and capacity to stimulate new approaches to addressing significant social issues.
This year the national award was awarded to 10 organizations.
“More communities need to intervene immediately to help victims begin the healing process. Research shows that the effects of a traumatic event extend well beyond the date of the incident and can affect educational and job performance as well as relationships with friends and family,” said FSRI CEO Margaret Holland McDuff in a statement. “Healing trauma is not only about mental health; it’s about learning at school, earning at work, having family and friends, and belonging to a supportive community.”
