PROVIDENCE – Gov. Donald L. Carcieri last week nominated Warwick Fire Department Chief John E. Chartier as the new state fire marshal. The nomination is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
Chartier has served as the emergency management director and chief of the Warwick City Fire Department since June 2001. Before that, he was the city’s assistant chief from 1999 to 2001. He joined the Warwick City Fire Department in 1976 and has progressed from firefighter, to lieutenant, to company commander, to battalion chief to deputy chief in 1997.
“I’m pleased that Chief John Chartier has agreed to serve as the state Fire Marshal,” Carcieri said in a statement last week. “His long experience as fire chief in the state’s second-largest city makes him an ideal candidate for this position. … That background will help him immensely as he takes on the role of the state’s chief enforcement officer.” •
