Groden Center to collaborate with MIT to create tools for autism measurement

PROVIDENCE – The Groden Network, a nonprofit autism-specialist organization, will participate with Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab in a $10 million, five-year collaborative grant to develop new technology for measuring and analyzing autism in children, the organization announced last week.

Dr. Matthew Goodwin, director of clinical research at the MIT’s Media Lab and associate director for research for the Groden Center, will collaborate with researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Boston University, the University of Southern California and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

It is the first large-scale effort by computer and behavioral scientists to jointly develop diagnostic and intervention technology for Autism Spectrum Disorder, a condition that affects 1 in every 110 children in the United States.

The research is aimed at developing video, audio and wireless physiological recording systems in order to better track and identify behaviors in children at risk for autism. With that information, clinicians will ideally be able to improve treatment.

“At the Groden Center, we’ll be deploying new video and audio and wireless physiological data capture technologies in every classroom,” Goodwin said. “We like to think of this as a step toward how behavior assessments will be conducted in the future – our technologies stand to enable ways of gathering high-quality data more precisely and efficiently than traditional methods.”

“We’re thrilled by the opportunity to collaborate with some of the brightest minds in the country on projects that will help us better analyze data and behavior,” said June Groden, co-executive director of The Groden Network.
The funding was made available through a National Science Foundation Expeditions grant.
