PROVIDENCE – The Hampton Inn & Suites Providence Downtown, a $20 million renovation of the former St. Francis Chapel, today opened its doors in the city’s Financial District.
Developer First Bristol Corporation first announced the project in June 2007 (READ MORE) and will hold a grand-opening ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. on April 15.
“We are thrilled to open our newest Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Providence,” First Bristol Corporation President James Karam (READ MORE) said in a statement today. “Hampton Inn & Suites is a leader in the mid-priced segment. This new property will provide business and leisure travelers with affordable high-quality accommodations directly in downtown Providence. And, considering today’s economy, we’re opening at the right time and at the right location for the city.”
Before it was St. Francis Chapel, the building had been the Old Colony Bank, an 11-story, 50,000-square-foot building. Newport Collaborative Architects’ redesign included a 10-story, 27,000-square-foot addition. The hotel originally had been slated to open in December, but because of the complicated construction was pushed back to March. (READ MORE)
“The challenges of historic preservation were met by constructing the new addition in such a way so as not to diminish the character of the original Old Colony Bank Building,” NCA Principal J. Michael Abbott said. “The addition is separated by a glass hyphen and the vehicular porte cochere is angled to follow on the bend of Weybosset Street with a large arch to heighten the sense of arrival.”
The hotel, at 58 Weybosset St., has 37 suites, 32 king rooms and 40 standard rooms, along with conference space and a business center. Rates start at $159 per night, according to First Bristol.
First Bristol Corp. – a privately-held firm that traces its roots to the 1975 founding of J. Karam Management Inc. – is a real estate development and management firm based in Fall River.
