NARRAGANSETT – In a surprise ceremony Thursday morning, veteran Narragansett High School social studies teacher Kristin Hayes-Leite was named 2018 Rhode Island Teacher of the Year.
An Ocean State native, Hayes-Leite, now social studies department chair, has worked at Narragansett High School for the past 16 years. During her tenure she has created new electives including ones based on contemporary issues and law and society.

In addition, she is a member of the school’s Fuse Architect pilot team which designs ways in which courses can better engage students through increased personalization.
Gov. Gina M. Raimondo and Ken Wagner, the Commissioner of elementary and secondary education were in attendance.
A graduate of Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, New Hampshire, Hayes-Leite received a master’s degree in teaching and reading from Rhode Island College. She has helped further develop the state’s educational assets as a leadership and global engagement instructor at Brown University’s Brown Leadership Institute as well as a world civilizations teacher in Coventry High School’s extended school year program.
Hayes-Leite is a member of the National Council on the Social Studies, the Rhode Island Society of Technology Educators and the International Reading Association. She was the 2016 Narragansett Employee of the Year and was awarded the Horace Mann Abraham Lincoln Fellowship in 2010.
