Customers select groceries and other items through Instacart’s web application, from retailers such as Whole Foods Market, Stop & Shop Supermarket, PriceRite, CVS Pharmacy and Petco. Instacart shoppers then deliver the orders directly to customers’ doorsteps, in as little as one hour.
Last month, Amazon.com Inc. announced plans to acquire Whole Foods Market for $13.7 million, part of the retail giant’s plan to build a distribution network for groceries. The acquisition could affect Instacart’s grocery-delivery business, which currently operates in 33 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.
In a July 10 release, Instacart said the company plans to hire at least 150 new shoppers to fill demand in the new Providence metro delivery area, which will serve more than 415,000 residents in Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts.
Areas of service in Rhode Island include Bristol, Cranston, Cumberland, East Greenwich, East Providence, Johnston, Lincoln, North Kingstown, North Providence, North Smithfield, Pawtucket, Providence, Warren, Warwick and West Warwick.
In southern Massachusetts, Instacart’s service will cover the majority of Bristol County, including Attleboro, Berkley, Dartmouth, Easton, Fairhaven, Fall River, Freetown, Mansfield, New Bedford, North Attleboro, Raynham, Seekonk, Somerset, Swansea, Taunton and Westport.
