Is professional soccer popular enough in this area to support a proposed $400 million development built around a new soccer stadium in Pawtucket?

A $400 million Pawtucket development project that includes a soccer stadium has the backing of state and city political leaders, in part due to an already approved funding mechanism for much of the public share of the costs – estimated at about $70 million to $90 million.

That should hopefully keep debate over the project focused on its merits.

The proposal would include construction of a soccer stadium for a United Soccer League Championship team, a hotel, a mixed-use development with housing units, retail and food and beverage, as well as commercial space and an indoor sports event center.

It could be a boon for the city, which had hoped for something similar from an ultimately failed proposal for a new baseball stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox.

But are you convinced there is enough interest locally in professional soccer to support all the ancillary development around the project that the city and state are hoping for?
