McCarthy, in her role as senior vice president and chief wealth client services officer at The Washington Trust Co., has honed and improved in those areas over the years, starting in legal services and now with the Westerly-based financial institution. She provides advice, manages investments, works with financial planning and serves as a fiduciary, among other services, at Washington Trust.

“I get to make decisions and set an example about things that are important to me, like work-life balance, hybrid work, aligning values and compensation, and diversity, equity and inclusion,” she said.

McCarthy exemplifies good leadership with her strategic and emphatic approach. She says she leads strategically and with empathy in a way to get things done.

A Cumberland native, McCarthy’s 33-year career began with pursuing a life in law. After graduating from Brown University, McCarthy earned her law degree from Boston College Law School and a Master of Law in taxation from Boston University School of Law.

In 1998, McCarthy joined Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP, where she was elected as the youngest partner in the firm at that time. She was lauded for her legal work, being named the 2018 Tax Attorney of the Year by Best Lawyers. She was also a member of the inaugural class of Providence Business News’ 40 Under Forty in 2005.

McCarthy also volunteers and supports multiple community causes, including being a board member for Children’s Friend & Service for more than 25 years. Housing is another cause McCarthy is passionate about and says she has been trying to launch an intergenerational housing initiative in Rhode Island for the past year.

“By leveraging successful models from Europe and other states, intergenerational housing could help to mitigate the impact of the housing crisis, assist the elderly, provide support for young adults and combat the worldwide epidemic of loneliness,” she said. “I am extremely excited and passionate about it and will be working hard to try to make it a reality in Rhode Island in the next few years.”
