WARWICK – A new scholarship has been created by the largest individual donation in the Community College of Rhode Island’s history, the university announced Thursday.

Local philanthropist Bhikhaji Maneckji donated $500,000, which will be used to create the Last Mile scholarship. The program is designed to help remove financial barriers so students can graduate, enter the workforce or pursue a bachelor’s degree more quickly.

The scholarships will give students who are at least halfway to graduation the funding they require to attend CCRI full time.

The Last Mile scholarship will cover costs not typically covered by financial aid, such as child care, transportation, lost wages and other basic life expenses.

More than 40 students already have been awarded the scholarship and will benefit from the program in the fall semester.

Students that enrolled in a fall 2015 or 2016 CCRI degree or certificate program may contact the university’s Office of Financial Aid for more information.
