Henry Cabrera purchased a plot of 14 acres of land in South Kingstown that was full of nothing more than hay and potential. And for the past three years he has worked to transform the lot into his luxury lavender farm, Lavender Waves Farm LLC, with a custom-made gazebo at the center of 4,000 lavender plants that were rooted in a unique design, various species of animals and an overnight farm suite fit for four guests. “There isn’t a business plan like this in Rhode Island,” said Cabrera. Lavender, a sustainable product that can regrow every year without replanting, can be sold as the actual flowers themselves, or for secondary uses such as a natural remedy for sleeplessness or anxiety, or can be infused in culinary creations.
Now Cabrera is looking to host weddings, family gatherings and corporate events. The farm suite is decked with 150-year-old wood that Cabrera repurposed from Pennsylvania, imported Italian granite on the countertops, amethyst sinks from Estonia and views of the lavender field. While staying in the suite, guests can book a culinary experience featuring a tasting menu and paired cocktail that’s infused with lavender wherever appropriate. “You go to a lavender farm and you’ll see a big plot of land,” said Cabrera. “But I thought completely out of the box.”
