Lifespan hospitals offering COVID-19 vaccine to emergency room patients

PROVIDENCE – COVID-19 vaccinations are now being offered to adult emergency room patients at Lifespan Corp.’s hospitals.

Shots are available at Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital between 7:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. for patients as they are being discharged.

Those who have recently been infected with COVID-19, or who have received treatment with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma within the past 90 days, are not eligible for the vaccine.

Lifespan is offering vaccinations in an effort to reach people who are at a high risk of contracting the virus, including residents of cities with high infection rates, those who are 75 or older, and people with serious medical or behavioral health conditions or who are homeless.

Emergency departments are “the safety net for our communities,” Dr. Anthony Napoli, medical director of Newport Hospital’s emergency department said.

Napoli, along with other Lifespan medical directors, organized the vaccine effort.

“This is a great opportunity to reach some of our area residents who are often more likely to be unvaccinated and at higher risk of getting ill when infected with COVID-19,” he said.
