PROVIDENCE – R.I. General Treasurer Seth Magaziner this month was recognized for his work to advance financial literacy for students and families.
The state treasurer received the 2017 William A. Forbes Public Awareness Award from the Council for Economic Education, a national organization focused on economic and financial education for students from kindergarten through high school.

“My mission is to promote economic growth and financial stability for all Rhode Islanders,” Magaziner said in a statement. “The council and I share the belief that financial literacy education is critical for students to make better decisions as savers, investors, borrowers, voters and participants in the global economy.”
Magaziner serves as chair of the Financial Education and Empowerment Committee of the National Association of State Treasurers. The national group praised Magaziner for the recognition.
“Throughout his tenure … Treasurer Magaziner has advanced innovative strategies that improve the financial literacy of residents in his home state of Rhode Island and beyond,” said Ken Miller, NAST president and Oklahoma state treasurer.
The award was given during the 56th Annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in New York.
“CEE is pleased to honor Treasurer Magaziner and recognize his work to raise awareness of the importance of financial literacy,” said Nan J. Morrison, president and CEO of the CEE.
