Mass. leads region in industrial plant openings

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Thirty-four new industrial plants are slated to begin operating this year in New England, an increase of 89 percent from the 18 that opened in 2006, according to a report today by Industrial Info Resources.
Massachusetts leads the region with 14 projected plant openings, an increase of 56 percent from last year’s nine Bay State plant openings. Connecticut is expected to add eight plants; Vermont and Maine are expected to four new plants apiece; and New Hampshire and Rhode Island each expect two new plants to come on line.
Industrial manufacturing accounts for 11 of the 34 plants, followed by 10 food and beverage plants, eight pharmaceutical-biotech plants, two power plants and one each for oil and gas transmission, oil and gas production, and alternative fuels.
The plants have a combined total investment value of $616 million – including original construction costs plus planned future projects – and projected total employment 2,600 jobs once all plants are fully operational.
New England currently has 1,600 plants in operation, employing 360,000 people, according to Industrial Info’s online plant directory.
