PROVIDENCE – The CEO of Narragansett Brewing Co. has applied for city permission to renovate a Brown University building in Fox Point for use as a microbrewery and brewpub.
The application filed by Mark Hellendrung identifies the location as 271 Tockwotten St. and 230 India St., adjacent to India Point Park.

He proposes a renovation of an existing, two-story building to include new brewery equipment, a brewpub, taproom and bar, restaurant, gift shop and education center, as well as employee offices.
The 29,000-square-foot building, owned by Brown since 2012, is now used as office, storage and classroom space. The university had listed the two lots for sale in 2017.
Conversion to a commercial use would require a special use permit from the city’s Zoning Board of Review. A hearing scheduled for Wednesday has been rescheduled to May 8, according to a board employee.
The proposed microbrewery and restaurant would have 34 parking spaces on-site, according to the application, up from the existing 10. The building is adjacent to the Hilton Garden Inn hotel, which overlooks the Providence waterfront.
Hellendrung could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening.
His application explained in a statement that the proposed brewpub would be consistent with the uses in the mixed-use zone. “The proposed use … will draw visitors to the neighborhood by providing food and refreshment adjacent to India Point park, will create jobs and improve the quality of life for Providence residents in general and the neighborhood residents in particular.”
Based in Providence, Narragansett Beer was listed among the 50 largest craft brewing and general brewing companies in the U.S. in 2018, according the nonprofit Brewers Association, which tracked sales volume.
