Miriam, Southcoast among top hospitals in nation with lowest heart attack mortality rates

PROVIDENCE – Two local health care providers have among the lowest heart attack mortality rates in the nation – Miriam Hospital in Providence and Southcoast Health in New Bedford, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.

Becker’s Hospital Review, a health care industry website, said 53 hospitals or health systems made the list, which based its findings on clinical data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The data, which is from July 2011 through June 2014 and is the most recent available, was collected from CMS’s Hospital Compare website.

All of the top hospitals have a 30-day mortality rate from heart attack of 11.7 percent or less, below the national average of 14.2 percent, according to Becker’s.

Miriam’s rate is 11.4 percent, while Southcoast’s rate is 11.7 percent, according to Becker’s.
Southcoast Health comprises four hospitals — Charlton Memorial in Fall River, St. Luke’s in New Bedford, Tobey in Wareham and Southcoast Behavioral Health in Dartmouth.

In addition, Miriam was recognized earlier this year by HealthGrades as one of the 100 best hospitals for gastrointestinal care and as one of the 100 best hospitals for pulmonary care.
