National Grid Rhode Island, East Providence police and fire and East Providence Emergency Management will be conducting a full-scale emergency exercise working through a fake natural-gas incident.

The exercise, including about 40 people, is designed to focus on how emergency personnel respond to a simulated third-party dig-up incident in the preparation for an actual event.

The fake incident will happen nearby the Brookdale East Bay assisted living facility “with simulated impacts to traffic, safety and utilities,” according to a notice from National Grid.

“The exercise will allow provide a framework for future response to potential gas incidents and allow key personnel to exchange ideas and expertise in responding and recovering from gas-related incidents,” the state’s largest utility company announced.

The exercise is scheduled for two hours from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
