(April 11, 2012) Continuing to work together; demonstrating the power of partnerships with a common goal of helping others, United Way of Rhode Island has announced that contributions by National Grid to its recently finalized workplace giving campaign increased more than 18 percent over last year – despite the economic uncertainty still surrounding the Ocean State.
“The ongoing and increased support of National Grid, at all levels, will have a profound impact on the well-being of our neighbors in need,” said Anthony Maione, president & CEO of United Way of Rhode Island. “Given the number of Rhode Islanders struggling to make ends meet, the generosity exhibited by National Grid’s employees, retirees, and from the company itself, could not have come at a better time.”

During the 2011-2012 workplace giving campaign, National Grid employees and retirees elected to make contributions to United Way’s Community Impact Fund through payroll deductions. In total, present and past National Grid employees donated more than $81,300; nearly $13,000 more than the previous year’s campaign.
Along with the increased contributions by its employees and retirees, National Grid made a corporate gift of $100,000 to help United Way of Rhode Island positively impact as many lives as possible.
“The people of National Grid know that contributing to the United Way is the best way we can directly help our neighbors who are in need,” said Timothy F. Horan, president of National Grid in Rhode Island. “This is about Rhode Islanders helping Rhode Islanders.”
National Grid is one of more than 400 Rhode Island companies and organizations that coordinate workplace giving campaigns, with many designating their donations to United Way’s Community Impact Fund.
Contributions to the Community Impact Fund are the best investment people can make to help reduce need in our state. With a goal of creating lasting change in the community, monies donated to the Community Impact Fund are invested to help people gain the skills they need to achieve financial stability while ensuring that more people have access to essential services during the most difficult times.
“We’re grateful to National Grid’s past and present work force for their generous support, and for the example set by all those who work at National Grid,” added Mr. Maione. “At United Way, we know that when we work together, we can change people’s lives for the better, and when we do, the results are truly remarkable.
