Providence College Science Complex | 1 Cunningham Square, Providence
Phase 1B of construction is underway on Providence College’s new science complex, scheduled for substantial completion by July 2018. Work began last summer on the $25 million addition, part of a multiphased, $50 million project involving three existing buildings on campus: Sowa Hall, Hickley Hall and Albertus Magnus Hall. The 37,000-square-foot, four-story building will serve as the new main entrance to the three existing structures. The completed complex will include 61,885 square feet of modernized laboratory space and three new technology-enhanced classrooms – one with 48 seats and two with 26 seats each. The building will also feature a rooftop observatory that will double as an outdoor classroom, a computer modeling and computational lab, a microscopy suite, a detached greenhouse and student commons to encourage collaboration and conversation. The project will also include a shared administrative suite for the department chairs in psychology, chemistry, biology and engineering-physics systems. Construction manager for the development is Bond Bros., with SLAM Collaborative serving as designer/architect.

The Breakers Welcome Center | 44 Ochre Point Ave., Newport
The Preservation Society of Newport County’s welcome center at The Breakers will provide ticketing, restroom facilities and light refreshments for visitors of the Newport Mansions. Work on the $5.47 million project began in May 2017 and is expected to be completed in May 2018. The design by Epstein Joslin Architects takes advantage of natural light and features a copper roof with an aged-green patina, allowing the building to blend in with the surrounding greenery. The one-story, 3,650-square-foot building incorporates garden architecture inspired by the historic mansion grounds, designed by landscape architect Reed Hilderbrand. Behan Bros., the builder/general contractor for the project, is employing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly materials and concepts, and the facility will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The two-story building, which sits on pilings over the Providence River, features 3,630 square feet of occupied space, with an additional 6,525 square feet on the dock level. Upon completion it will house the Edgewood Yacht Club on the first level and Brown University’s sailing team on the second level.
