NEWPORT – A new series of financial relief measures have been put in place to help ease the potential economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city announced.
Effective immediately, the city will abate all penalties and interest on fourth-quarter taxes due May 5 until June 30.
Businesses and individuals can apply for additional relief by downloading the online application and emailing it to lsitrin@cityofnewport.com, or mailing it to: Finance Director, 43 Broadway, Newport, R.I. 02840.
Additionally, the Department of Utilities will be temporarily suspending all water service shutoffs and collections activities related to nonpayment, according to a news release. Customers facing financial hardships are asked to contact the Utilities Department at (401) 845-5600 to set up a flexible payment plan.
The city also announced that its resident parking program, which normally goes into effect May 1, will be delayed. Resident parking stickers will not be required, and police will not enforce resident-only parking rules until June 1, the release states.
