Newport, R.I. hotels and resorts honored in Condé Naste Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards

NEWPORT – Newport was chosen as one of the best small cities in the United States to visit in the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards conducted by Condé Naste Traveler.

The City by the Sea was named No. 14 in the readers’ choice awards, ahead of Santa Barbara, Calif., and just behind Palm Springs, Calif.

Newport was just one of two New England cities on the Small Cities list, with the other being Portland, Maine, at No. 11.

Charleston, S.C., was ranked No. 1 among small cities in 2018.

On the big U.S. cities list, Boston was No. 10, the only New England city on the list. Chicago was ranked No. 1 among large cities.

The awards were based on more than 429,000 responses this year.

The Readers’ Choice Awards also included the Top Hotels in New England vote results as well as Top Resorts in New England vote results, including several Rhode Island hospitality players.

For top hotels in New England, The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport was the highest-rated Rhode Island hotel at No. 8. The Castle Hill Inn in Newport was the second-highest-ranked Rhode Island hotel at No. 14. At No. 21 this year, The Break in Narragansett was the third-highest-rated Rhode Island hotel in the Readers’ Choice Awards.

Other Rhode Island hotels included in the top 40 in New England were The Attwater in Newport (No.28), The Dean in Providence (No. 32), Hotel Viking in Newport (No. 34) and Watch Hill Inn (No. 37) in Westerly.

The Windham Hill Inn in West Townshend, Vt., ranked No. 1 overall in New England.

In the Top Resorts in New England category, the highest-rated Rhode Island locale was the Ocean House in Westerly at No. 4. The Weekapaug Inn, also in Westerly, was not far behind at No. 6 this year. At No. 30, ending the readers’ choice list for New England, was Gurney’s Newport Resort and Marina in Newport.
