NFIB endorses bill to let drugs be reimported

WASHINGTON – The National Federation of Independent Business has endorsed legislation that would allow consumers, pharmacies and wholesalers to buy prescription drugs from other countries for use in the United States, a practice that is now illegal.
The bills, S-242 and HR-380, would allow the purchase of FDA-approved prescription drugs that are manufactured at FDA-inspected facilities in 19 industrialized nations, and would create a regulatory framework for reimportation, with the FDA overseeing shipments of prescription drugs reimported into the U.S. for commercial or personal use.
The NFIB wrote in an endorsement letter that the legislation “secures a framework for the safe and legal importation of prescription drugs.” The group joined more than 50 consumer, labor and other organizations in backing the bills; key opponents include the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.
