
PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index in the Northeast region increased 1.4% year over year in September, not seasonally adjusted, slower than the 1.7% growth rate nationally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Thursday.
Core CPI in the Northeast region, excluding food and energy, increased 2.3% year over year.

Northeast CPI changes year over year in September:
- Food and beverage CPI increased 1.1%
- Housing CPI increased 1.8%, including a 3.2% increase in rent prices
- Apparel CPI declined 0.2%
- Transportation CPI declined 1.6%, including a 1.8% decline in new vehicle CPI and a 6% decline in motor fuel CPI
- Medical care CPI increased 4.9%, including a 5.3% increase in medical care services
- Recreation CPI increased 1.1%
- Education and communication CPI increased 2.5%
- Services CPI increased 2.4%
The report also showed that overall, New England CPI increased 1.8% year over year in September, faster than both the U.S. and the Northeast region.
