PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index in the Northeast increased by 4.3% year over year in July, slower than the 5.4% national rate in that time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Wednesday.
Price growth in both the region and the country was lead by an increase in energy and transportation costs. In the Northeast, energy costs increased 20.9% year over year, and nationally, prices rose by 23.8%. Transportation costs in the region rose 16.7% year over year and increased by 19.4% nationally.

Price growth in the region was offset by a 1% decline in medical care costs year over year. Nationally, medical care costs rose 0.3%.
Food and beverage prices in the Northeast increased 2.5% year over year, slower than the national rate of 3.4%.
Housing costs increased 3.3% in the region and 3.4% nationally over the year.
Apparel costs in the Northeast rose 4.1% year over year and 4.2% nationally.
Recreation costs in the Northeast increased 2.2% over the year, slower than the national rate of 3.5%.
Education and communications costs increased 1.3% regionally and 1.1% nationally.
Other good and services costs rose 2.9% year over year nationally and 3% in the Northeast.
