NEWPORT – The Naval Undersea Warfare Center’s division in Newport said its operating budget exceeded $1.1 billion in 2011 for the second consecutive year.
The division employs 2,752 full-time government civilian employees and 334 military members, spending a gross payroll in excess of $280 million. About 74 percent of the division’s civilian employees are scientists or engineers, and about 37 percent have graduate degrees.

More than $634 million was spent on payroll, construction, facility support and local contracts. It is the largest federal activity in the state in terms of personnel and payroll, NUWC said.
It awarded contracts totaling $517 million, with Southern New England getting $323 million. Rhode Island businesses garnered $276 million in contracts, with $31 million going to Massachusetts businesses, and $16 million to Connecticut ones.
