NWS issues Friday flood warning for R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for all Rhode Island and Bristol County, Mass., due to impending rain and warm weather from Friday morning to Saturday afternoon.

The NWS predicts between 2 and 4 inches of rain, which when combined with melting snow (temperatures are expected to reach the 50s), could result in significant urban and street flooding during the Friday evening commute.

The warning also advised that river and stream flooding are possible with the possibility of isolated ice jam flooding.

Ahead of the storm, the R.I. Emergency Management Agency warned residents to be on alert for puddles of water and snow. It advised that roads and walkways could become hazardous as well.

Both RIEMA and the Providence Department of Public Works reminded residents that shoveling snow away from catch basins and storm drains can mitigate the effects of flooding.
