EAST PROVIDENCE – Patrick J. Kennedy, former U.S. Representative for Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District, has joined the board of trustees at Bradley Hospital where he hopes to further his role as an advocate of mental health research and services.
Kennedy, who now resides in Brigantine, N.J., sees this board position as an important part of his new effort, known as the “One Mind for Research” campaign, to spur new research and collaboration about the brain – “the notion of going to inner space, not outer space.”

The campaign was launched recently on the 50th anniversary of his uncle’s [John F. Kennedy] speech challenging the United States to send a man to the moon and back within a decade.
“The benefit of joining a board like Bradley’s is that they are on the forefront, they are the real pioneers, especially in the area of autism and child and adolescent mental health,” Kennedy said, in an interview on Aug. 12 at Bradley Hospital. “It really fits with my broader interest in the neuroscience field.”
Some of the best scientific research, Kennedy continued, is already going on at Bradley.
“I am very confident in representing to the broader neuroscience community, both nationally and internationally, that Bradley is a great place to look to for evidence-based research and intervention for various developmental disabilities in neuro-psychiatric challenges for our kids,” he said.
Bradley Hospital, founded in 1931, was the nation’s first psychiatric hospital devoted to children and adolescents. It has a research arm, the Bradley Hasbro Children’s Research Center; it is affiliated with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University as a teaching facility; and it also operates a fully certified special education school. The private, nonprofit hospital is a member of the Lifespan hospital system.
“We are very pleased to have Patrick join the Bradley Hospital board of trustees and work with us to advocate for mental health services and eliminate the stigma too often associated with it,” said David A. Brown, chairman of Bradley’s board of trustees.
