PROVIDENCE – The city’s Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (PEMA) is asking cell phone users who live or work in Providence to register their telephone numbers with the Reverse 911 Community Notification System.
In case of emergency, the system allows PEMA and other authorized public safety officials to automatically send a recorded warning or instructions to all listed, unlisted and non-published residential and commercial telephone numbers in the affected area.

Registration is automatic – except for cell-phone users, because mobile numbers are not tied to any given location.
Uses of the system may include natural disaster alerts, hazardous material leaks, emergency evacuations, search and rescue operations, crime prevention and wanted-person alerts, neighborhood emergencies and homeland security notifications. It is expected to be specifically helpful for targeting those affected by a problem that affects only a portion of the city.
