PPS hosts Northern Ireland officials

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Preservation Society this month hosted a group of Northern Ireland government officials seeking to learn from Providence’s urban revitalization, planning, housing and design.

The Northern Ireland’s Assembly’s Social Development Committee chose Providence for its similar size, economy and demographics, PPS said. And “also because it is recognized the world over for its pioneering approach to urban issues.”

The R.I. Historical Society’s Barbara Barnes gave a walking tour of Capital Center and Downtown.

“We are honored to be selected to host this important international outreach,” PPS President Oliver H.L. Bennett said in a statement. “It would be very gratifying if the examples of Providence’s renaissance could help heal the cities and towns of Northern Ireland.”

The trip comes after a May 29, 2007 peace settlement and the government in Northern Ireland is seeking ways to revitalize previously war-torn communities, PPS said.
