PPS releases 2018 Most Endangered Properties list

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Preservation Society released its 2018 Most Endangered Properties list at its annual meeting Wednesday.

The list is comprised of what the organization considers architecturally and historically significant properties deemed in threat of deterioration, neglect or demolition.

This year’s list includes the Industrial Trust Building (also known as the Superman Building, built in 1928), the State House Lawn (1901), and the five buildings that will be moved or demolished for a new Brown University performing arts center on College Hill.

The five buildings at risk for removal for the performing arts center are located at 127 Angell St. (built in 1853), 129 Angell St. (1849), 135 Angell St. (1885), 82 Waterman St. (1857) and 86 Waterman St. (1857-1875).

  • Water Supply Board Building: 552 Academy Ave., Mount Pleasant (c. 1908)
  • Gustave F. Mensing House: 216-218 Adelaide Ave., Elmwood (c. 1897)
  • Rhodes Street National Register District: Upper South Providence (c. 1850s-1890s)
  • Parcel 1A: South Water Street, I-195 Redevelopment District, East Side
  • Knight Memorial Library: 275 Elmwood Ave., Elmwood (c. 1923)
  • Broad Street Synogogue: 6888 Broad St., Elmwood (1910)
  • United Presbyterian Church: 619 Chalkstone Ave., Smith Hill (1895)
  • Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church: 12 Spruce St., Federal Hill (1925)
  • Earnscliffe Woolen Mill/ Paragon Worsted Co.: 25 and 39 Manton Ave., Federal Hill (1898 and later)
