PROVIDENCE – Construction sector employment in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area remained unchanged year over year in April, ranking No. 251 for construction employment growth rates among United States metro areas, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Thursday.
Construction employment in the Providence metro was 23,700 at the end of the month.

“Demand for construction is steady or rising in most parts of the country, and many contractors are adding workers when they can find them,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “At the same time, many firms report they would have hired even more employees if only they could find enough qualified workers.”
The highest growth rate in the nation in April were in the Monroe, Mich., and St. Cloud, Minn., metro areas, where construction employment increased 26% year over year.
The Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area ranked No. 4 among all metro areas in the nation with a 16% growth rate over the year, or an increase of 600 workers.
The Taunton-Middleborough-Norton, Mass., metro area ranked No. 323 in the nation in April, declining 3% year over year, marking a decline of 100 workers.
Other local metro area construction job changes included:
- Brockton-Bridgewater-Easton, +6%, 300 jobs added
- New Bedford, no change
The Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Ariz. metro area added the most construction jobs during the past year, with sector employment rising 16,600 jobs, or 14%.
The largest job losses in the sector between April 2018 and April 2019 occurred in Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, N.C.-S.C., metro area, with employment falling 2,600 jobs or 4%.
