Providence metro unemployment declines to 2.9% in Oct.

PROVIDENCE – The unemployment rate in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area was 2.9% in October, seasonally adjusted, a decline from 3.4% one year prior, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Wednesday.

The unemployment rate in the metro area was level with the Rhode Island rate for the month. The national unemployment rate in October was 3.3%.

The metro area labor force increased 0.5% over the year to 694,805. The number of unemployed in the area declined 13.6% to 20,228 in that time. Nonfarm employment in the metro area increased 1.5% year over year to 609,900.

The BLS said that jobless rates were lower in 240 of 389 metro areas year over year.

In the New Bedford metro area, the unemployment rate was 3.7% in October, a decline from 4% one year prior. The New Bedford metro labor force increased 234 people year over year to 86,348. The number of unemployed in the area declined 7.9% year over year to 3,178. Nonfarm employment in the area totaled 67,800, a 0.6% increase from one year prior.

The unemployment rate in the Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area was 3.3%, unchanged from one year prior. The labor force in the metro increased 314 people year over year to 142,782. The number of unemployed increased 25 people year over year to 4,779. Nonfarm employment in the region increased 0.1% year over year to 130,000.
