For a larger version of this map, CLICK HERE. /"/>PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island metropolitan area unemployment rate increased to 12.0 percent of the labor force in July from 11.5 percent in June, according to the latest data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The July unemployment rate was slightly higher for the Providence-Fall River-Warwick area than a year ago when it stood at 11.8 percent.

New Bedford, Mass., also saw unemployment grow, hitting 12.7 percent in July, an increase from 12.2 percent in June. The area did worse in July than a year ago, when it registered an 11.5 percent rate.
Nationally, the unemployment rate in July was 9.7 percent, not seasonally adjusted, the same as a year earlier.
In 192 out of 372 U.S. metropolitan areas, unemployment was higher; in 170 areas the rate declined. Ten metropolitan areas saw no change, the bureau reported.
Seventeen areas recorded jobless rates of at least 15.0 percent, while six areas registered rates less than 5 percent.
The two areas with the highest unemployment rates in July were El Centro, Calif., with 30.3 percent, and Yuma, Ariz., at 28.7 percent.
