PROVIDENCE – Prices for self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island rose 35 cents in one week to $2.70 per gallon, according to a report released Tuesday by AAA Northeast.

Average regular unleaded gas prices in the state were 51 cents higher this week year over year. Regular unleaded gas ranged 42 cents from $2.43 to $2.85 per gallon. Prices in the Ocean State are 4 cents higher than the national average of $2.66 per gallon.

Self-serve, regular midgrade averaged $2.88 per gallon this week, ranging from $2.69 to $3.01 per gallon.

Self-serve, premium prices averaged $3.13 per gallon, ranging from $2.89 to $3.32 per gallon.

“It’s important to remember that the high prices are not caused by gasoline supply, but by the ability to move the fuel from the Gulf Coast to the Eastern Seaboard,” Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, said in a statement. “As refineries come back online and the Colonial Pipeline resumes operations, those issues will eventually be resolved. We would hope and expect that these spikes are short term and prices will soon return to their traditional post-Labor Day levels.”

In Massachusetts, prices for self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline rose 44 cents in one week, an increase of 59 cents year over year to $2.71 per gallon.

Prices are 5 cents above the national average and range 36 cents from $2.54 to $2.90 per gallon.

Prices for midgrade unleaded averaged $2.90 per gallon, ranging from $2.74 to $3.10 per gallon.

Prices for premium gas in the Bay State averaged $3.05 per gallon, ranging from $2.76 to $3.30 per gallon.

Both Massachusetts and Rhode Island gas prices hit a two-year high this week.
