R.I. October unemployment rate 3rd lowest in New England

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island had the third-lowest unemployment rate in New England in October at 3.4%, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

Across the nation, unemployment rates were higher in October in 24 states, lower in one state and stable in Washington, D.C., compared to September, the agency reported Friday. Washington, D.C., and 49 states had jobless rate decreases in October when compared with October 2021, the data showed.

The national unemployment rate was 3.7% in October, up from 3.1% in September and 0.9 percentage points lower than in October 2021. 

The District of Columbia had the highest unemployment rate in the country in October at 4.8%, while Minnesota and Utah had the lowest rate at 2.1% each.

New England unemployment rates in October:        

  • Vermont: 2.3%, an increase from 3.1% in September and a decline from 5% year over year.    
  • New Hampshire: 2.4%, up from 2.2% in September and a decline from 3.1% one year prior.      
  • Rhode Island: 3.4%, an increase from 3.1% in September and down from 5% in October 2021. 
  • Massachusetts: 3.5%, up from 3.4% in September and down from 5% one year prior.           
  • Maine: 3.6%, up from 3.3% in September but a decline from 4.4% year over year.        
  • Connecticut: 4.3%, an increase from 3.4% in September but down from 5.4% a year ago.
