PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked as the eighth worst state in America to do business in Forbes’ annual Best States for Business rankings released this week.
The Ocean State’s No. 43 2018 ranking did not change from last year.

States were judged in six categories including business costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life. Despite not moving in the overall rankings, Rhode Island’s rankings moved in all of its individual metric rankings.
Rhode Island received its worst ranking at No. 45 ranking for the most business-friendly regulatory environment in the country, after ranking No. 48 last year. The state’s second-worst ranking was for lowest business costs at No. 44 in the nation, following a No. 46 ranking last year.
The state’s best ranking was for quality of life, which Forbes ranked No. 19 in the country, down from No. 7 in 2017.
The Ocean State also ranked No. 30 for highest labor supply (No. 27 in 2017), No. 34 for growth prospects (No. 40 last year) and No. 36 for best economic climate, which ranked No. 40 in 2017.
North Carolina ranked No. 1 again in 2018, after taking the top spot in 2017, followed by Utah and Texas.
Massachusetts ranked highest overall of any state in New England at No. 19 this year, followed by New Hampshire (No. 34), Connecticut (No. 40), Rhode Island (No. 43), Vermont (No. 47), and Maine (No. 48).
Alaska ranked worst overall among all states in the country this year.
