R.I. sports bettors lose $851K in Aug.

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island sports gamblers lost $851,788 in August, betting $10.1 million and winning back $9.2 million, according to the R.I. Lottery.

The August figures are the last figures prior to the launch of mobile betting in the state and the last before the start of the National Football League regular season.

The state’s take from the sports book revenue will be 51%, following commissions and operating expenses. The remainder will be split among International Game Technology PLC, Twin River Worldwide Holdings Inc. and William Hill.

The majority of sports bets in August by dollar value were wagered at Twin River Casino  Hotel in Lincoln at $7.7 million. Tiverton Casino Hotel saw $2.3 million in sports bets placed for the month.

The average monthly sports book revenue in Rhode Island for a full month of betting to date in August was $941,571. Betting started in late November of 2018.

Fiscal year to date in August, sports betters in Rhode Island had wagered $18.4 million and lost $1.7 million.
