R.I. Treasury outperforms fiscal 2016 in unclaimed property returns

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Treasury announced the state’s Unclaimed Property Division processed 10,070 claims in returning over $12.2 million in property in fiscal 2017.

The office processed over 2,000 more claims and more than $500,000 in returns than in fiscal 2016, when it returned 8,860 claims worth $11.7 million.

“Our Unclaimed Property team is committed to reuniting Rhode Islanders with their money,” Treasurer Seth Magaziner said in a news release. “Most of the time people don’t even know they are missing money until they check with our office, so I encourage everyone to check findRImoney.com. It only takes a few minutes and we have money waiting for more than 100,000 Rhode Islanders.”

The Treasury Unclaimed Property team said it is still currently holding over $330 million in unclaimed property that comprises money left in old bank accounts, safe deposit boxes, uncashed paychecks, unused gift certificates, unreturned utility deposits, uncollected insurance payments, and forgotten stocks and dividends.
