Rhode Island Historical Society announces new board appointments

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Historical Society hosted its 196th annual meeting Nov. 8, where multiple appointments to its board of trustees were made.

Luther W. Spoehr, senior lecturer in the departments of education and history at Brown University, was elected the board’s chair. He succeeds James P. Loring, chief financial officer, treasurer and senior vice president at Amica Mutual Insurance Co. Loring will remain on the board.

Winifred E. Brownell, retired dean of arts and sciences at the University of Rhode Island, was elected vice chair of the board. She succeeds Spoehr.

Other officers elected include Michael L. Baker Jr., assistant vice president, accounting, at Amica, to the role of treasurer; and Robert H. Sloan Jr., principal, Sloan Associates, to the role of secretary.

Trustee re-elections include William S. Simmons, Brown anthropology professor, and Barbara J. Thornton, a partner at Brewster Thornton Group Architects in Providence. Both trustees will enter their second term.

New trustees elected to the board include William R. Logan, senior vice president and client advisor, Citizens Private Wealth Management; David R. Marquis, president, ChemArt Co.; and Lisa E. Melton, vice president, insurance marketing, AAA Northeast.
