R.I. gets $1.6M to help clean brownfields

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week awarded 10 grants totaling $1.6 million to Rhode Island communities to help them assess, clean up and redevelop blighted commercial and industrial properties.
The awards were among 294 brownfields grants nationwide, totaling $70.7 million, by the EPA.
The Ocean State grants announced were chosen from among more than 800 applications nationwide.
The R.I. Department of Environmental Management received $200,000 to perform a communitywide assessment of hazardous materials issues in Providence.
In addition:
• The City of Pawtucket got $600,000 to clean up properties on Front Street.
• Woonasquatucket Valley Community Build received $400,000 to clean up properties at the former Providence Steel and Iron.
• Omni Development Corp. is getting $200,000 to clean up the former John and Thomas Hope Co. mill in Providence.
• The Rhode Island Family Life Center got $200,000 to clean up two parcels on Plainfield Street in Providence.
