Overall, Rhode Island’s population increased by 0.4 percent, the smallest positive increase in the nation, outranking only Michigan which was the only state to see its population decrease, the Boston Globe said.
Outside of the Hispanic or Latino population – which noted an overall decrease of 3.7 percent – the white population decreased by 5.9 percent and the “some other race” category declined by 20.7 percent. Positive growth in the category included blacks or African Americans, 27.8 percent, American Indians or Alaskan natives, 16.6 percent, Asians, 28.8 percent, and native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, 21.7 percent.
Rhode Island’s population grew to 1,052,567 people in 2010 from 1,048,319 in 2000. The most populous city or town was Providence, with 178,042 residents, noting 2.5 percent growth and the least populous area was Portsmouth, at 17,149 people.
For growth, South Kingstown noted the largest percentage leap, 9.7 percent, while Newport city lost 6.8 percent of its population. Trailing South Kingstown for growth were: Cumberland, 5.2 percent, Westerly, 4.0 percent, and Coventry, 4.0 percent. On the other hand, Woonsocket dropped 4.7 percent of its population and Warwick lost 3.7 percent.
The most populous cities, in order, were: Providence, Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket and East Providence.
By county, Providence County ranked No. 1, followed by Kent County, Washington County, Newport County and Bristol County.
