Counterdrug/Drug Demand Reduction Program to benefit state youth
CRANSTON – The Rhode Island National Guard is running a Youth Development Adventure Camp (YDAC) for schools and agencies over ten weeks this summer it was announced here today. The program is part of the Guard’s Counterdrug/Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) program.
The program targets both mainstream and at-risk 12-17 year old youth which are identified through strategic partners from the school resource officer association, drug rehabilitation agencies, and community centers. The program is held at the Rhode Island National Guard’s Camp Fogarty, Route 2, East Greenwich and services 40 campers per week. It is the 8th year of the program’s existence which has grown increasingly.
The camp is run by Rhode Island Army and Air National Guardsmen who are specially trained in the program. Through the use of a wide range of activities such as land navigation, first aid techniques, drill and ceremony marching, and extensive use of the Guard’s ROPES course, participants are exposed to the benefits of a healthy, drug free lifestyle.
RI Army National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Coons, Counterdrug Program Coordinator, noted that “Our goal is to provide attendees with a challenging but fun-filled week that will reinforce their ability to resist making poor choices and enhance their quality of lift. We do this by placing them in a position where they accept certain challenges and overcome their fears.”
