WASHINGTON – Rhode Island will receive an additional $694,751 in emergency Low-Income Home Energy Assistance contingency funding, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed’s office announced Tuesday.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will release the emergency funds this week, said Reed, D-R.I. The Ocean State already has received $33.7 million in LIHEAP money this year.

The program funds are “a lifeline for more than 37,000 families throughout the state, especially for elderly residents and those with young children,” said Reed. “With winter approaching it is important to provide additional assistance for those in need.”
As of Oct. 1, Rhode Islanders in need of financial assistance for home heating and cooling costs can access the funds through the seven Community Action Program agencies. The funding can also be used to weatherize eligible homes.
Congress has appropriated $5.1 billion this year for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
The Community Action Program agencies are responsible for screening clients, authorizing and disbursing payments, and maintaining expenditure records.
