R.I. to honor four dozen local educators

PROVIDENCE – About four dozen educators from schools across Rhode Island are to be honored by state officials tomorrow (Tuesday, June 5), the R.I. Department of Education said today.

The event, entitled “A Celebration of Accomplished Teaching,” will be held in the State Room at the R.I. State House in Providence, where a 4:30 p.m. reception will precede the 5:15 awards ceremony.

This year’s honorees will include Warwick teacher Catherine Davis Hayes, the state’s 2007 Teacher of the Year; Pawtucket’s Amy Dufault-Thompson and Chariho’s Catherine Moffitt, winners of the 2006-2007 Milken National Educator Award; and Pawtucket teacher Jodie Olivo, winner of the 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Also to be recognized are the Burrillville, Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, Johnston, Newport, North Kingstown and North Providence District Teachers of the Year, plus those teachers who have received certification this year through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Presiding over the ceremony will be Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, who will be joined by James A. DiPrete, chairman of the state Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education, and Peter McWalters, commissioner of elementary and secondary education.
