WESTERLY – Rhode Island College will ease the process of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing for registered nurses by partnering with Westerly Education Center to offer classes required for a B.S.N., degree, RIC announced Friday.

“This is an exciting development for Westerly Education Center,” said Amy Grzybowski, executive director of the center. “This program is designed to accommodate the busy lives of working nurses.”

Enrollment will be opened to registered nurses working at Westerly Hospital, South County Hospital and L&M Hospital before they fulfill the admittance requirements for the degree program.

The R.N. to B.S.N. program will consist of five nursing courses and individualized coursework fulfilling requirements for the liberal arts. Credit for liberal arts courses can be obtained in Westerly by RIC students and those enrolled in any degree program at the College. The first required course in the curriculum, Introduction to Writing and Research in Nursing, is now open for enrollment and will last 12 weeks.

“This program is committed to supporting adult learners on their pathway to baccalaureate degrees,” said Donna Huntley-Newby, director of the RIC R.N. to B.S.N. program. “Through individual advisement, small nursing classes and supportive services, the registered nurse students are able to navigate the challenges of balancing their work, family and school commitments.”
